These gluten-free sweet potato fries are the best recipe for anyone craving a healthier alternative to regular fries! Made with simple ingredients, they come out perfectly crispy in the air fryer with less than 20 minutes of cooking time. They're perfect for pairing with burgers and sandwiches, or enjoying as a healthy snack on their own.

Whether or not you follow a gluten-free lifestyle, these crispy sweet potato fries are going to be your new favorite snack! They're so easy to make in the air fryer, and once you master the simple technique I'll share below, you'll get that irresistible crunch every time. Trust me, once you try these crispy-on-the-outside, tender-on-the-inside fries, you'll never want to make them any other way!

    Ingredients

    • sweet potato
    • avocado oil
    • za’atar
    • paprika
    • salt
    • black pepper
    • tahini (for dipping sauce)

    See recipe card for quantities!

    Instructions

    1. Wash sweet potatoes and cut into thin fry shapes.
    2. Coat evenly with oil and seasonings.
    3. Air fry at 375F for 15 minutes, tossing every few minutes. Pair with your favorite dipping sauce and enjoy!

Note: You have the option to peel sweet potatoes before chopping if desired!

    Substitutions

    • Avocado Oil - feel free to use olive oil if preferred
    • Za'atar - if you don't have any on hand, you can make a homemade similar spice blend using oregano, thyme, sesame and cumin.
    • Salt - regular or garlic salt both work great for this recipe
    • Tahini - I love pairing these fries with tahini, but you can use any of your favourite sauces or dips!

    Equipment

    • Sharp Knife
    • Cutting Board
    • Baking sheet
    • Mixing Bowl

How To Store Gluten-Free Sweet Potato Fries

For best results, let your fries cool to room temperature before storing. Line an airtight container with a paper towel (this helps absorb excess moisture) and layer your fries inside. They'll stay fresh in the fridge for up to 4 days. To reheat, simply place them in your air fryer basket for 2-3 minutes at 375°F, or in a preheated oven for 5-7 minutes at 400°F until heated through.

Note: While homemade sweet potato fries can be frozen, we don't recommend it as they tend to lose their crispy texture. If you do freeze them, they'll keep for up to 3 months - but remember they won't be quite as crispy when reheated!

    3 Top Tips For Success

    1. Be sure to toss your sweet potato fries every few minutes while baking to ensure even cooking.
    2. Cut your sweet potatoes into thin strips of equal size (about ¼ inch thick). This will avoid having some fries burnt while others are still undercooked.
    3. Don't overcrowd your air fryer basket! I recommend arranging your fries in a single layer to achieve the best results. Working in separate batches might a little extra cooking time, but it's worth it for the crispiest results.
    4. Preheat your air fryer! Even though some air fryers say they don't require preheating, I would still recommend it to ensure your fries are baking at the correct temperature throughout the cooking time.

    FAQs

What do sweet potato fries taste like?

These crispy baked sweet potato fries are packed with sweet and savory flavors. They're crispy on the outside, yet soft and tender on the inside.

    Are French fries gluten-free?

Plain potatoes are naturally gluten-free! However, many restaurant and packaged fries are coated with gluten-containing seasonings or flour. For a delicious gluten free option, make this sweet potato fries recipe using just sweet potatoes, oil, and seasonings – no gluten-free flours needed!

    Can I customize the seasonings?

Definitely! I love the flavor of these greek sweet potato fries, but you can customize them with any of your favourite seasoning. Some of my favorite seasoning to add include garlic powder, chili powder or onion powder.
