What Is Matcha?
Matcha is a fine powder made from green tea leaves, traditionally grown and harvested in Japan. Unlike regular green tea, you consume the whole leaf, giving matcha its vibrant green color and powerful antioxidant boost. Smooth and naturally energizing, matcha has been a staple in Japanese culture for centuries. It now adds a fresh twist to everything from a classic matcha latte to desserts like chewy matcha cookies.
What Are The Benefits Of Matcha?
Matcha is high in antioxidants which can help prevent cell damage, and has been shown to support overall heart health. Here are more of the great health benefits of matcha:
- Calm, Steady Energy: With L-theanine, matcha gives you a smooth, slower release energy boost without the crash of coffee.
- Antioxidant Benefits: Matcha is packed with catechins, a type of antioxidant that helps protect the body from damage caused by free radicals.
- Supports Metabolism: It may help gently boost metabolism and support fat burning, especially when enjoyed regularly.
- Supports Heart Health: Drinking matcha can help maintain healthy cholesterol levels and blood pressure.
- Boosts Immunity: With vitamins and minerals, matcha helps support your body’s natural defenses.
- Natural Detox: The chlorophyll in matcha helps your body detox and cleanse naturally.
Ingredients Needed

- Frozen Ripe Banana - frozen bananas make the best smoothie texture while giving this smoothie a natural sweetness.
- Avocado - adds a creamy texture while providing fibre and healthy fats.
- Chia seeds - offer great benefits like fibre, protein and antioxidants.
- Matcha powder - be sure to use high quality matcha powder.
- Kale - fresh or frozen kale both work great!
- Dates - a lovely natural sweetener to this smoothie.

Substitutions
- Unsweetened Almond milk - feel free to use any non dairy milk you prefer. My favorite alternatives are oat milk, coconut milk or soy milk.
- Dates - replace with 1tbsp maple syrup.
- Kale - fresh or frozen baby kale both work great in this smoothie recipe. You can also use other leafy greens like fresh spinach if desired.
- Vanilla protein - I use vegan vanilla protein to keep this recipe plant based and provide a delicious vanilla flavor. You can use unflavoured protein, but the smoothie won't be as sweet so you may need to adjust with a little extra sweetener. Feel free to substitute with whey protein if not following a plant based diet.
Equipment Needed
- High Speed Blender
- Smoothie Glasses
How to Store this Matcha Smoothie
This matcha smoothie is best consumed fresh! I recommend enjoying once made as the ingredients will brown and oxidize quickly if stored for later.

3 Top Tips for Success
- For best results, use frozen fruit — this will make the most thick and creamy smoothie texture.
- Use high quality matcha powder for best taste — look for a vibrant green matcha color, usually found at specialty tea shops as oppose to online stores.
- Consume fresh! I recommend enjoying this smoothie straight away as it will lose flavor and color if stored for future.
